A question for the whole room

One story to open. A room full of ideas to test.

Ready in three steps

  1. Open the story.Read and try the first pages together.
  2. Pause for a prediction. At the story’s question, read its choices aloud. Invite a vote and ask, “What makes you think that?”
  3. Run it. Watch. Wonder.Choose the class’s prediction, run the experiment, and compare what happened with your guesses.

Different guesses are welcome. The experiment gives everyone something to rethink.

Something to put on paper

A one-page prediction and observation sheet. No answers included.

After the experiment: discussion notes

Talk about what happened

  • Predict first: if we keep the weight the same but make the footprint wider, will the pressure go up or down? Then check it in the experiment.
  • A skinny tire and a wide tire carry the same weight. Predict which one sinks, and explain it using the words pressure and area.
  • Predict whether a light, skinny bike tire or a heavy, wide tractor tire sinks more into mud, then test your reasoning against the answer.

Where it shows up in real life

  • Snowshoes spreading your weight so you stay on top of fresh snow
  • A thumbtack or high heel poking into something a flat finger or sole can't
  • Wide flip-flops versus skinny boot heels on wet beach sand
