How do temperature and surface area work together to change fizz speed?

Dropping an antacid or fizzing vitamin-C tablet into a glass and watching it race to dissolve — sometimes a furious eruption, sometimes a slow trickle. Same tablet, so what changed?

  • Before you drop the tablets in, guess: which glass — cold or warm — will finish fizzing first? Then time them.
  • The warm one finished sooner. Did it really make more bubbles, or just let them out faster?
  • Now crush one tablet to powder and drop it in cold water. Why does it erupt so fast without any heat?
